Vegas in spagnolo significa prati erbosi, poiche’ un tempo nella valle circostante si trovavano numerosi pozzi artesiani che permisero lo sviluppo di una grossa zona verdeggiante, da cui deriva appunto il nome Las Vegas, ma nel corso dei secoli i corsi d’acqua si sono inabissati sempre piu’ in profondita’, rendendo l’intera area arida e deserta come appare oggi.
Quando lo stato del Nevada venne annesso agli Stati Uniti, il gioco d’azzardo fu bandito, ma pochi anni dopo ci si rese conto del suo enorme potenziale lucrativo e nel 1931 venne legalizzato a livello locale nella sola Las Vegas, favorendo l’ascesa della citta’ a capitale mondiale del gioco d’azzardo e dei casino’.
Sono ormai centinaia i casino’ in citta’, aperti 24 ore su 24, 7 giorni su 7 e sono ormai milioni (40 milioni per l’esattezza) le persone che ogni anno tentano la fortuna per cambiare le proprie sorti, perche’ in fondo e’ questo che viene offerto: l’illusoria possibilita’ di diventare ricco con una puntata vincente.

Come a dire: attenti a voi! Le slot machine e le roulette sono piu’ micidiali e irresistibili del canto delle sirene dell’Odissea, che con le loro melodie stregate cercarono di attirare in una trappola mortale Ulisse e i suoi compagni, salvatisi soltanto perche’ si erano tappati le orecchie con la cera.

E le distrazioni sono davvero tante: da file interminabili di slot machine, a bingo, blackjack, roulette, poker in tutte le sue varianti, baccarat. Ci sono persino schermi per il gioco d’azzardo ai banconi dei bar e nelle piscine di alcuni alberghi, come per esempio nella piscina del Caesars Palace chiamata Fortuna.

E ancora, se non potete andare al casino’, sara’ il casino’ a venire da voi! Alcuni alberghi, come il Bellagio e Aria, portano il gioco d’azzardo direttamente nella vostra stanza d’albergo, con tanto di tavoli da gioco e croupier.
Insomma ce n’e’ davvero per tutti i gusti!
Non sono una giocatrice d’azzardo ma qualche puntata alla roulette ovviamente l’ho fatta anche io, a volte vincendo e altre perdendo, ma sempre con la cera nelle orecchie, salvandomi da quel richiamo ammaliante, come fecero i compagni di viaggio di Ulisse.
